Whitsundays!

G’day mates! Hereby another report from Down Under, written by an ill Myrthe. Yes, I’m actually ill, which is so far the least fun part of the journey. Being sick while having to take an overnight bus in which you can barely lay down properly, then arriving to your hostel and appearing to be placed in a 10-bed dorm (which are all 10 occupied), it sucks. The fact that you just don’t have any privacy here or the ability to lay down in a comfy bed, drink tea and watch movies makes me miss home a lot. But anyway, that's not what I was gonna entertain you with!
Now 4 days ago we went on a 2 night/3 day sailing trip on the Whitsundays (or rather the ocean around it, the Whitsundays itself are a group of islands). We went on a sailingboat together with about 18 other travelers and 4 crew members. We were crammed into a small motor boat that brought us to Broomstick, our floating home for the next few days, where we quickly stowed our bags away and got ready to hit the waves. It was windy, VERY windy.
That day we just went for a nice snorkel and had a lovely, warm dinner. We watched the sunset and as the sky got dark we sat and talked, laughed and drank Goon, the most disgusting but cheap wine on the planet. And against all odds, I slept great together with like 14 others in the tiny room underneath the front deck of the boat.
We were woken up around 06:30 for breakfast, and sailed off to the main Whitsunday island. This place is seriously breathtaking! Unfortunately the weather wasn't as pretty, so the pictures I took won't have the wow-factor like those on Google (hint hint).
Anyway, despite the clouds, rain and wind we went for a nice swim, scrubbed ourselves with the highly moisturizing sand, attempted building a piramid (and failed), and took the most cliche but fun jumping pictures.
After our visit to the Whitsundays we went to another bay for a snorkel, and then found ourselves a good spot for the night. Which was an interesting one as it was the first time ever drinking wine through a snorkel. Yeah.. The way it works is you cut down the bottom of a water bottle, place the neck of the bottle on top of the snorkelpipe, then let someone put on the snorkel and fill up the bottle. Technically works as a giant straw. I appeared to be a natural at it.
The next morning we had an early snorkel, and then headed back towards mainland. This was quite rough, as the wind nearly blew us over and we had some waves crashing into us as well, but hey at least it was another adventure!
Once back in Airlie we desperately needed a shower, so thank god for the double shower we had in our hostel. Had a little afterparty with the boat crew at a bar nearby, but sleep got the best of me, like it usually does.
Next day we left for Rainbow Beach, where we are now, on the overnight bus. We just came back from a 3 day trip to Fraser Island, but I will update you all on that later. For now I have some serious showering and packing to do.
Seeya!

Hi everyone, I'm Myrthe, 18 years old and together with my friend Sanne I am going to discover Down Under. From Perth to Cairns to Sydney, our route is very diverse. After 2 months of total Aussie freedom I will continue my journey in Sri Lanka where I will be working as a volunteer at a school near Colombo.
